Is He Dead? by Mark Twain
Millet
Millet was a poor, young artist. Costuming for men in this show was very fun because painters during this time period, though poor, partook in a colorful and artistic style.
Creating this costume was a collaborative project in which I created the vest. I found some beautiful drapery fabric that I was used as the front of the vest and lined with purple muslin that also made up the back.
One of the fun things about this show was that it was possible take in already made pants to give the straightened look of the time. The pants that worked perfectly on the actor unfortunatly didn't have a working zipper, so I ended up sewing him into his pants every show night.
The character only had one outfit. In the first half of the show, when Millet was poor, the costume was unkempt and messy. At the end, after he had made money off his paintings, his costume was much more refined and respectable.
