Is He Dead? by Mark Twain

Is He Dead? is a show about a struggling artist, Millet, in 1846 Paris who fakes his death and comes back as his widowed sister, Tillou, in order to increase the worth of his paintings so he can marry his sweetheart Marie.

Cecile

I created the dress for the sister of Marie, Cecile. Her character was young, middle class woman who would have attired the latest fashion in Paris in the springtime. Below are process photos of this dress that won the Main Stage Critic's Choice Award in costume construction at the 2019 Colorado Thespian Conference.

This dress was made before the cast was listed, so I made it to be taken in or out. Several inches were added to the center back and side seams and the whole bodice was flatlined. The skirt was made to be pleated more to take it in and unpleated to take it out. In the end, the actress was about four sizes smaller than the original, so there were many alterations to be made.

I drafted my own collar as I did not like the one that came with the pattern. I traced a paper pattern and then used a similar pattern for another collar to find the grainline.
